Chifles Plantain, Cassava & Tortilla Chips

22 Feb

We love these products — they are made by Plantain Products of Tampa, FL. You can find them at Publix stores throughout Florida. If you live outside the Sunshine State, visit Chifles store locator feature at:

Here’s a little history on the company …

Segundo Argudo’s home country of Ecuador is famous for Plantain Chips. Segundo’s wife, Peggy, is from North Carolina and they both met in Washington D.C. while Segundo was studying geophysics on a scholarship program from Ecuador. After working as a geophysicist for several oil companies, the family; including the two children, Stefanie and Ricardo, settled in Tampa, Florida. Mr. & Mrs. Argudo immediately began experimenting with making Plantain Chips from their memories of the same delicious snack which was sold by the many street vendors in Cuba. The Argudo’s began selling Chifles products in 1965, initially in Tampa, Miami and then New York. The company operated from two plants before moving to the present location in 1972. Mr. Argudo passed away in January of 2000 from a sudden illness.

The plantains and cassavas are imported from Ecuador and Costa Rica where they are processed in the company’s 20,000-sq. ft. facility with 30 employees located in Tampa, Florida. The products are sold to approximately 20 Snack Food distributors primarily concentrated in the New York area and Florida.

Our success has been attributable to quality. This not only describes our fine products but the employees who are responsible for all the details required to manufacture the Plantain and Cassava Chips. We are also proud of our ethical business philosophy in dealing with customers and employees.

Plantain Products Company is a manufacturer and distributor of Plantain Chips, Cassava Chips, Pork Rinds, Tortilla Chips and Plantain Soup Mix. Plantain Products Company began operations in 1963 by Mr. & Mrs. S.G. Argudo in the kitchen of their home. Mrs. Argudo is currently President and CEO. www.chifleschips.com

Cafe Havana in Oneco, FL

16 Oct

Cafe Havana is on 63rd Street in little Oneco, Florida. Oneco is a tiny crossroads located about midway between Sarasota and Bradenton. The local population is heavily Hispanic, so this is a good place to drop a Cuban cafe. After getting a taste earlier in the week at Jose’s in Bradenton, I decided to do a little compare and contrast at this roadside oasis. Nice joint inside — quite a bit larger than the cozy confines at Jose’s.

Pictured above is the Lechon (pork) Cuban sandwich with grilled onions. I ordered this for lunch — along with a 12 oz. Jarritos Madarin soft drink. The menu made the sandwich sound quite a bit better than it actually was. Expecting citrus marinated strands of pork laced with carmelized grilled onions, I was disappointed to find the pork came in small squares that were luke warm and pretty flavorless. The bread was good and, after liberally applying some salt and Tampa-made Valencia brand Hot Sauce, I was ultimately able to choke it all down without too much difficulty. It was OK, I guess. But it surely paled in comparison to Jose’s delectible Cuban sandwich.

The highlight of this particular meal was the platter of sweet fried Maduros (plantains). These babies were cooked to perfection and I polished them off in short order. I would encourage you to stop by if you’re in the neighborhood. Just don’t order the pork with onions sandwich since there appear to be many other more promising options on the rather copious lunch menu at Cafe Havana.

Square 1 Burgers – A New Twist

26 Sep

Once upon a time (1964) in Norman, Oklahoma, Bill Shumate opened his first restaurant, a burger joint called “Across the Street” (it was located across the street from the University of Oklahoma). Many years and restaurants later, he yearned to go back into the business he loved best: burgers. In 2006, he and his partner, Joanie Corneil, began developing a new concept for a burger restaurant and named it SQUARE 1 BURGERS in regard to Bill’s history. After researching “burgers” across the country, they decided that you, the customer, would enjoy “making your own masterpiece”. Starting with nine types of burgers, from sashimi tuna to buffalo to Meyer’s 100% Angus, “making your own masterpiece” is not only fun, it’s delicious with 3 types of buns, 25 toppings, 12 cheeses and 13 sauces.
