Little Debbie joins Peanut Butter recall

WASHINGTON – The company that sells Little Debbie snacks announced a recall Sunday of peanut butter crackers because of a potential link to a deadly salmonella outbreak.

The voluntary recall came one day after the government advised consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods with peanut butter until health officials learn more about the contamination.

The announcement by McKee Foods Corp. of Collegedale, Tenn., about two kinds of Little Debbie products was another in a string of voluntary recalls following the most recent guidance by health officials. The South Bend Chocolate Co. in Indiana said Sunday it too was recalling various candies containing peanut butter from Peanut Corp. of America.

McKee said it had not received any complaints about illnesses from people who ate any size peanut butter toasty sandwich crackers or peanut butter cheese sandwich crackers. The recall covers crackers produced on or after July 1.

Officials are focusing on peanut paste, as well as peanut butter, produced at a Blakely, Ga., facility owned by Peanut Corp. Its peanut butter is not sold directly to consumers but distributed to institutions and food companies. But the peanut paste, made from roasted peanuts, is an ingredient in cookies, cakes and other products that people buy in the supermarket.

Kellogg’s Recalls Several Products

Although the company claims investigations have not indicated that any of their products have been tainted by the recent salmonella outbreak, the Kellogg Co announced on Wednesday that they are pulling all of their Austin and Keebler branded peanut butter snacks from stores to protect consumers.

Kellogg’s recall follows a nationwide recall of peanut butter made in a Georgia plant was issued late Tuesday even as the number of people sickened by salmonella-contaminated peanut butter rose to 425 in 43 states since September.  The Food and Drug Administration is notifying some 30 companies that bought peanut butter or peanut paste from a Georgia facility to test their products, said representatives of Consumers Union and Food & Water Watch.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is the focus of the FDA’s investigations into the outbreak. PCA is one of several peanut paste suppliers used in its Austin and Keebler branded peanut butter sandwich crackers, Kellogg said.

Companies around the country are being encouraged to halt sales as the risk is significant. The peanut butter paste could be in a wide variety of products from cooking sauces to baked goods.

Kellogg said it is taking precautionary measures including putting a hold on any inventory in its control, removing products from retail store shelves, and encouraging customers and consumers to hold and not eat these products until regulatory officials complete their probe.

The products are Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.
