A & M Peanut Shop – Established in 1947 (Mobile, AL) – “We Must Be Doing Something Right!”
Front of this historic building. Check out the giant goober lurking in the window.
Beautiful monument in nearby Bienville Square (named for Mobile’s founder). Teddy Roosevelt delivered a speech on the Panama Canal issue in this park way back in 1905. “Bully!”
Glazing the warm pecans with lots of gooey white sugar.
Fresh roasted and spiced Creole Peanuts.
Decisions, decisions. Tons of choices here. Who knew there were so many different varieties of nuts? Lots of candy here too — including some very tempting chocolate truffles.
This antique scale has seen some major duty in its time. One of the workers told me that this scale is more accurate than any of the newer models in the store. What does that tell you, folks?
I grabbed a 1/4 lb. of VA Redskin peanuts — just $1.25 including this handy collectible storage unit. What a deal! You can really tell the difference between these nuts and those purchased at your local mega-mart. How? Well, they have a bigger crunch and taste super fresh — a bit like freshly popped popcorn. A & M roasts their peanuts in the shell every hour in a 90-year old roaster. Salted nuts are roasted as you watch.
Please visit this great little shop the next time you’re near downtown Mobile. We need to fight to keep them around for another 60 plus years. For more on beautiful downtown Mobile, please visit the city’s Downtown Business Alliance website at www.downtownmobile.org .
