Webb Wilder Strikes Again

Wilder Kin Receive Blues Trail Marker

On Saturday, November 17, 2007,  a historical marker was placed
on Farish Street in Jackson Mississippi, along the Mississippi Blues
Trail, to commemorate the site of The Record Mart. The Record Mart was
owned by Webb’s Aunt and Uncle, Lillian and Willard McMurry, founders of
Trumpet Records.
Of the event, Webb said:
As you may know, my aunt and uncle, Lillian and Willard McMurry owned and
operated the now legendary Trumpet Records of Jackson, Mississippi in the early
fifties. They recorded and released records onElmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson,
Willie Love and the Three Aces, BigJoe Williams, Luther Huff, Jimmy Swan, The Southern
Sons and many others. They are both in the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame.

Their legacy is not only one of artistic and entrepreneurial innovation. They
are remembered for their fair dealing and warm relationships with the
artists both black and white, gospel and secular. This was at a time
when many similar labels were known to be cold, opportunistic and
exploitative.
Much of the great Trumpet canon can be found in the catalog of Alligator Records
owned by Bruce Iglauer, a great admirer of Lillian, Willard and Trumpet. There is
also a book on the label and it’s history by Marc Ryan.
Jerry “Boogie” McCain will be there as well as family members and state
officials. This is a historic occasion and a huge honor for Trumpet’s
memory and a testament to their lasting contribution to the blues! Other
recently added blues markers include one in McComb to honor Bo Diddley.
