Hawaiian Country Connection

14 Jun

Country folk love Hawaiian music. Hawaiians like country music. The common denominator is the soothing pedal steel guitar. My grandfather, who as far as I know never ventured west of the Mississippi river, had several Hawaiian music records in his limited LP collection. I have obviously inherited an appreciation for the island sounds. Living here on Siesta Key (some say it reminds them of Hawaii) helps to set the mood very nicely. I recently picked up the two LPs seen above at my local Goodwill store. Marty Robbins served in the Pacific during WWII, which led to his love for the songs of Hawaii. Little Roy Wiggins played steel for Eddy Arnold and others before recording his homage to Hawaii on the old Starday record label. Both LP’s are great and highly recommended. Each features the requisite colorful leis and swaying hula girls. Think you can find the Robbins collection on CD (try Good luck with the Wiggins LP, which is long out of print and a true collector’s item. The video clip above is Jerry Byrd and Marty Robbins performing an unknown hula tune.

KK “T” at the YMCA

14 Jun

The other day I wore my “Eat Krispy Kreme Doughnuts” t-shirt while I was working out at the Y. Didn’t really think that much about it. Got some funny looks from some of the more hard core fitness buffs wearing their fashionable UnderArmor and No Fear ensembles. I do realize that wearing a KK shirt to a fitness center is akin to wearing a I Like Mike Huckabee t-shirt to an Obama rally. Yet in a way it speaks to my philosophies in life. I want to be healthy and stay in shape, but I am not prepared to give up all the pleasurable things in life. All things in moderation … that is the key. I am also a believer in the old saying “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” How much closer can you get to your enemies than actually wearing them on your person? Besides, who can truly resist the power of hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts (pictured above)? I for one will gladly admit defeat with No Fear whatsoever.
