Canopy Road Protection

4 Jun

I ride my bike almost daily around our beautiful neighborhood on Siesta Key. My route often takes me through several protected “canopy roads.” These roads, with lush trees and vegetation hanging overhead, are very scenic and provide lots of shade from the FL sunshine. I take my hat off to the local officials for taking the necessary action to preserve these oasis-like areas. Local residents cannot trim or cut back these shady spaces without incurring fines … or worse.

Here is the detail I found on the county’s forestry site: The Canopy Road Ordinance (Art. IV, §98-92) designates, promotes and protects our natural and cultivated canopy roads. Sarasota County has 61 canopy roads to date. Along these roads, dappled sunlight filters through integrated live oaks and other majestic shade trees to form natural covered bridges over residential streets and public thoroughfares.
